Friday Photo - The Cyclisk

The Cyclisk in Santa Rosa, California
The Cyclisk is an obelisk made out of bicycles - 340 bicycles and one tricycle to be exact. The sculpture is 65 feet tall and weighs five tons. Oddly, it sits in an area of car dealerships, and was paid for by Nissan. The sculpture was created by artists Mark Grieve and Ilana Spector at a cost of $37,000. You might be wondering why Nissan would pay this much for art that features bicycles. It turns out that the city of Santa Rosa requires construction projects over $500,000 to spend one percent of the total on public art. Since the dealership they were building cost $3.7 million, they needed to spend $37.000 on art.
